Phil Did Not See His Shadow!

A crowd gathered at Gobbler’s Knob early this morning, awaiting the emergence of the groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil. After a tap of a cane on Phil’s tree-trunk cage, his door was opened, and Phil emerged. Phil did not respond, other than to blink. Placed on top of the trunk, he attempted to flee before his actions were closely analyzed. The Groundhog Club spokesperson loudly proclaimed,  “There is no shadow to be cast! An early spring is my forecast!” That is good news, especially for the crowd who gathered in Punxsutawney, Pa. where the temperature was reported at 22 degrees. For us in the lowcountry, it may mean an early spring which usually brings temps into the 70s-80s!

Interesting to note that there are relatives of Phil who followed suit very early this morning. There is a groundhog in Canada named Shubenacadie Sam who also saw no shadow. Then there’s was Staten Island Chuck in New York and General Beau Lee in Georgia — both of whom concur with Phil. That’s enough to make up what some would call a repetition of groundhogs.

Speaking of repetition….one of Charleston’s own knows a thing or two about Phil and his shadow……
